Enter Maheshwar, the Gupta Kashi (Secret Varanasi) on the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, one of the seven sacred holy places of pilgrimage in India. It is said that of the five most sacred rivers of India – Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Godavari and Kaveri, Narmada is the holiest. According to legend, a dip in the Ganga River will cleanse one’s soul, seven dips in the Yamuna is supposed to do the same, but mere sight of the Narmada has the same effect. It is also said that when Ganga herself feels need for a holy bath of renewal and rebirth, she takes the form of a black cow and using the darkness of the night as her cover, comes to cleanse herself in the waters of the Narmada, returning to her own banks as a white cow in the morning. Hindustanis from all over the world flock to this hidden gateway for spiritual renewal. SwAr Ashram is on the banks of Narmada's ghat, part of the Royal Trust, a 3 minute walk from your room. Niradhara is its Managing Director, Swamini, and resident Amma.
