A shift in Space

January 31, 2015

How unfortunate it is that yoga has come to be viewed as a commodity. The demand for every permutation of yoga in every fitness center around the country has caused a degradation in the way it is perceived, so that what was once treated as a gift is now treated as a good. We're not standing for it any longer. We are "clearing a space to step into a new story of self, and a new story of the people."

On March 8, it will be one full year since Space opened. As we have transitioned through this first year, our mission has stabilized and our vision has become clearer. At Space, we believe in sharing and promoting the transformative power of yoga. Our core values of kindness, honesty, openness, and social responsibility motivate us in striving to cultivate a dynamic and non-competitive learning environment where our members feel truly integrated into a community, and we are dedicated to strengthening our local area by making the life-changing practice of yoga accessible to everyone.

As we move forward into the future, our goal is to fulfill this mission however we can, and we're starting now. Beginning in the month of February, six of our weekly practices will be open for donations on a pay-what-you-can basis. Not to be confused with our weekly Community Practices (in which 100% of the proceeds are donated to charity), these practices are labeled "Karma" practices, and are open to members and non-members alike. There is no set fee for dropping in. Members and pass-holders may use their practices if they choose, but are also welcome to make a donation and still retain the practices they currently hold. Of course, we still need to keep the doors open, so we kindly request a minimum donation of $5, but if you don't have it, we certainly won't turn you away.

We believe that yoga is a gift, so we're making a shift in the way we offer it. We also believe in this powerful community. Without the love and support of each and every person who has stepped foot into Space, we wouldn't be in existence. Not only are we deeply grateful for this support, but we have no doubt that you can continue to sustain us. If you have any questions concerning these new practices, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at spaceyogastudio@gmail.com, or through our Contact page. You can learn more about the philosophy behind our movement towards this Gift Economy in the attached video, or through the webiste of Charles Eisenstein at http://sacred-economics.com/. We look forward to having the honor of sharing this practice with all of you in the future.

Love and light.
